Coach interference at third - a
By Carl Childress
November 21st, 2008

Carl is in the process of discussing some of the common rules of baseball. Here begins a group of four articles dealing with coach interference.

"Hey, that never happens!" you exclaim. I reply: "Almost never. That's why you need to study it often. It is so rare, you won't have much on-field experience to help out." Articles like this can help prepare you for that rare occasioin.

Working a New Position: The Umpire — Part I
Welcome to the grinder!
By Dennis Cirillo
November 21st, 2008

In 2001 I decided to expand my officiating career to football. I was a basketball official starting my third year, enjoyed officiating, loved football, and figured — why not! I joined a local association called LIAFO (Long Island Association of Football Officials) http://liafo.org. After three seasons of lower-level ball, I was lucky enough to be drafted onto a varsity crew as their Umpire.

Good! My only problem was: I had never worked the position. Bad! On the lower levels at that time, LIAFO employed only three officials: Referee, Head Linesman, and Line Judge.

In my new role I worked three scrimmages and opened the season Saturday, 18 September, 2004. This two-part series will outline where I went for help and how I performed. Hopefully, it will help other officials in my same predicament.

Coaches View Games Differently
By Jim Dixon
November 20th, 2008

The Eagles' playoff hopes were growing in the final minutes. They fought through the Vipers' press, scoring in an 8-1 run to open the fourth quarter. The game descended into a free-throw contest in the final period. Aggressive play and the ensuing fouls led coaches, players, and fans who supported both teams to berate the officials. When games are called according to the rules, why is it always the officials' fault?

Excerpt The Usual Suspects
With a double play possible
By Carl Childress
November 20th, 2008

There's not much argument about who is the foremost writer of "self-help" books for amateur umpires. Rather, books for umpires of amateur games. It's our esteemed editor, Carl Childress.

Here we begin weekly excerpts from his 2004 book about the common rules of basedball. The book is available from Officiating.com. Naturally.

Here's our pledge: Buy the book. If you don't think it's worth the money, tell us: We'll refund your money (minus shipping and handling). And you can keep the book.

I've got a secret I've been hiding under my skin.
My heart is human, my blood is boiling, my brain, an IBM.
So, if you see me acting strangely, don't be surprised:
I'm just a man who needed someone —
And somewhere to hide

Mullets, leg warmers, strawberry Izods, skinny ties, parachute pants, moon walking, dead baby jokes: The 80s have a lot to answer for.

But you've got to love the music.

If you're not a fan, it's time to ride, ride like the wind. Otherwise we're having some retro 80s fun with five second violations and a referee's parody worthy of Weird Al.

So click on the link because...

It's a dead man's party, leave your body at the door.
